If you're a person on the internet, you've probably heard about #amazonfail, Amazon's new, shiny practice of stripping GLBTQ(etc) literature (along with the occasional BDSM/erotica novel) of their sales rankings.

Sales rankings help publishers and distributors decide what books to buy/stock, so this is a big deal. ([livejournal.com profile] meta_writer is a bit better at explaining this than I am!) It also removes books from searches, bestseller lists, and other ways of publicizing them.

With Day of Silence coming right up in less than a week - April 17 - I find this especially ironic.

This is not only affecting books that are explicitly sexual, but books that have no sex in them, advice books such as The Advocate's Guide to Colleges and Universities, the memoirs of people like Stephen Fry and John Barrowman, classics and neo-classics such as Well of Loneliness, Oranges are Not The Only Fruit, Rubyfruit Jungle, etc etc. Meanwhile, sex toys and heterosexual romance novels are keeping their sales rankings.

Please go check out the following links:
- [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge does a good, concise rundown with list of links

As of right now, Amazon is claiming there was a glitch in their system.
Yeah....a big, homophobic glitch. I imagine that must be what happened...

ETA: on that note, a great list of other anti-gay companies to avoid, including a "local to California" list for those of you who are west-coast-y.
